Frequently Asked Questions

How does one refer an individual to Three Rivers Residential Treatment | Midlands Campus?
Referrals may be submitted by parents/guardians, social workers, court officers, schools, private practitioners, child guidance clinics, psychiatric facilities, special education personnel and members of the clergy. Referrals should be sent to the Admissions Coordinator at (803) 791-9918 or toll free at 1-877-791-9918.
What information may be needed for the referral process?
An initial telephone contact is acceptable; however, a written packet of information is required before the admission process can proceed. Required information for a referral includes:
  • Copy of complete psychological, and/or psychiatric evaluations, including I.Q. testing scores (including neuropsychological evaluation, if done).
  • If the child/adolescent is currently taking medication, type and dosage is provided. (Accuracy is extremely important.)
  • Previous placement history: including psychiatric treatment, residential, foster care, corrections, etc. (staffing reports, discharge summary).
  • Social history describing family structure and relationships/ Developmental history.
  • Custody status - legal and/or physical.
  • Current behavioral functioning; strengths, talents, problems.
  • Insurance information (ie. Medicaid, private insurance, etc).
What population does Three Rivers Residential Treatment | Midlands Campus serve?
Three Rivers Residential Treatment | Midlands Campus, a subsidiary of Psychiatric Solutions Inc., opened for business on November 1, 1989. It was created to provide focused intermediate and long-term care to children and adolescents manifesting psychiatric and behavioral health disorders with a significant impairment of social, interpersonal, educational, or vocational functioning that requires the provision of inter-disciplinary treatment interventions; and for whom appropriate community or family resources do not exist. Three Rivers | Midlands Campus has four treatment programs, serving adolescents ages 11 to 17 ½: One short term program for female adolescents with general psychiatric and behavioral health disorders, One short term program for males and females with general psychiatric and behavioral health disorders that is a Tricare certified program, One program that provides treatment for females who are moderate to high risk for sexually reactive / aggressive behaviors and One long term program that provides psychiatric and behavioral health treatment for females.
Will my insurance company pay for services at Three Rivers Residential Treatment | Midlands Campus?
If a resident is considered for admission, the following would be needed in order to determine financial payment:
  • Copy of private insurance card, front and back.
  • Copy of medical assistance card or completed application for medical assistance.
  • Certification of Need for Admission, if applicable, for South Carolina Medicaid Funding.
If private insurance does not approve residential benefits, in some circumstance a single rate agreement with the insurance company may be arranged. Private pay arrangements may also be made between families and the facility.
What is the length of stay?
The length of stay varies and is dependent upon the residents’ investment into the treatment program.
How is progress determined and measured?
Three Rivers | Midlands Campus uses a highly structured system of phases, level privileges, and consequences in order to assist with behavior management and to teach adaptive behavior. The Phase/Level System charts a developmental path from the point of entry into the treatment program, the Orientation Phase, to the final leg of the journey, known as the Transition Phase. Other phases include the Initial, Historical, Insight, and Integration Phase.
A treatment plan is established upon admission to address the resident’s immediate needs, presenting problems, long term clinical issues, and criteria for discharge. Concurrent with implementation of the treatment plan, a discharge and aftercare plan is established to clinically move the resident toward a return to a less restrictive environment.
How do adolescents maintain their schoolwork while in treatment?
The Education program of Three Rivers | Midlands Campus is in alignment with the South Carolina Department of Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
The residing students attend school Monday through Friday for six hours a day (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
The education provided to Three Rivers | Midlands Campus’ residents is comprehensive. A variety of educational offerings are provided to residing students. Residents rotate to classrooms according to subject areas and short term education placements are available on a case by case basis to address behavioral and/or emotional concerns. Remedial instruction is provided for residents who may have fallen behind due to their disorder and require additional assistance. All residents are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular school activities (e.g., outings, leisure activities, unit-based groups, etc.) when appropriate. Media resources are made available to all residents for research, enrichment, and enhancement activities. These services are available to both regular and special education residents, predicated upon the findings of the inter-disciplinary team.
Can Three Rivers Residential Treatment| Midlands Campus handle chronic or aggressive residents?
Yes. Our facility has the capacity to accept more challenging mental health clients. All aspects of a referral (to include a resident’s level of aggression) are considered by the Admissions Team, which consists of the Medical Director, the Clinical Director, the Program Director and the Executive Director.
Do the residents participate in any off campus activities?
Residents are provided with community activities commensurate with their ability to handle such experiences. Aside from recreational activities, the Education Department schedules educational outings, which foster an appreciation of historic, cultural, and scientific resources in the region. Outings include opportunities for residents to further their social skills and obtain age appropriate socialization experiences.
Are Worship services provided?
Three Rivers | Midlands Campus provides opportunities on site for residents to voluntarily participate in spiritual life groups or religious education. These services or educational experiences are non-denominational in their orientation. Speakers and special programs (i.e. Youth Group Activity led by outside resources) are offered on campus. Outside religious organizations may provide one to one visits/counseling for residents on request. Residents are given the opportunity to voluntarily participate in off campus local church or religious experiences appropriate to their religious orientation. Off campus activities are also based on their level of progress and their Phase.
How often do residents receive therapy?
All programs will: offer family therapy a minimum of two times a month, every other week. Every effort will be made to have one session face-to-face with the parent and/or guardian and resident. Individual therapy will be offered 90 minutes a week. The session may be divided into two forty-five-minute sessions (or shorter sessions if and when appropriate). Group therapy, facilitated by a clinician, will be offered three to five times a week. Programs may exceed these standards as deemed appropriate.
Can I visit or call my child at any time while at Three Rivers | Midlands Campus?
Our residents have a very structured day which consists of individual, group, family therapy, and education, along with activity therapy. Telephone calls, incoming and outgoing, are usually made after 6 p.m. Residents are assigned call nights where in which they may make outgoing phone calls. This may also depend on this Phase/Level privileges. Residents also have an approved contact list from which their calls are made. This is signed by their legal guardian. Those who are making incoming calls to the facility must have a Resident ID # in order to speak with the resident.
In reference to visits, all visits must be arranged through the resident’s primary therapist. Visits will not be allowed if approval from the primary therapist/Clinical Director has not been received.
